AT&T posts revenue and income gains on mobile growth

Carrier's mobile data revenue grows 18.8% over a year earlier, profit up nearly 9%

IDG News Service - More mobile customers and increasing mobile data use pushed AT&T's revenue up slightly in the second quarter of 2012 and helped drive an 8.7% increase in net income.
AT&T on Tuesday reported revenue of $31.6 billion, up 0.3% from the second quarter of 2011. Net income was $3.9 billion, compared to $3.6 billion a year ago. Mobile revenue was $16.4 billion, up 4.8% from the second quarter of 2011, and mobile data revenue was up by $1 billion or 18.78%.
Excluding the revenue for AT&T's advertising solutions unit, which it sold May 8, revenue was up 2%, the company said in a press release.
The company reported an addition of 1.3 million mobile customers, bringing the number to 105.2 million.
The company also reported the first revenue growth in its enterprise services in four years, as well as a 1.7% growth in consumer wireline revenue, the largest growth there in more than four years.
AT&T's earnings per share for the quarter were $0.66, beating analyst expectations of $0.63.
The quarterly results showed "strong execution across the board," Susan Johnson, AT&T's senior vice president of investor relations, said in a video posted on the company's website. "No matter how you cut it, we had an outstanding wireless quarter, thanks to our focus on mobile data."
AT&T sold 5.1 million smartphones during the quarter, with 3.7 million of Apple's iPhones activated, the company said in a press release. Smartphone users are "valuable customers" giving AT&T twice the revenue of other mobile customers, Johnson said. About 43 million AT&T mobile customers own smartphones, officials said.
The company's wireline revenue for the quarter was $14.9 billion, down 0.8% from a year ago. Residential wireline revenue was $5.5 billion, up 1.7%. The company's U-verse broadband and television service revenue grew 38.3% from a year ago.
U-verse TV added 155,000 subscribers to reach 4.1 million during the quarter, while U-verse broadband added 553,000 customers to reach 6.5 million. Total broadband connections, including DSL, declined by 96,000, however.
The company reported a "very strong quarterly performance," independent telecom analyst Jeff Kagan said in an email. "While the traditional wire line business may be declining, wireless, Internet and U-verse television are rising."

Survey signals unprecedented demand for iPhone 5

Change-Wave poll says 31% of North American consumers likely to buy Apple's next smartphone

Computerworld - Advance demand for Apple's next iPhone is at an all-time high, said a research firm today, predicting huge sales later this year for what most have dubbed the "iPhone 5."
A survey of more than 4,000 North American consumers by ChangeWave Research showed a record enthusiasm for Apple's next-generation smartphone, with nearly a third saying they were likely to buy one.
"Advance demand for the 'iPhone 5' is strikingly higher than we've seen for any previous iPhone model," said Paul Carton, ChangeWave's vice president of research, in an abbreviated report sent via email.
Of the people polled, 14% said they were "very likely" to buy a new iPhone for themselves or a family member, while 17% asserted that they were "somewhat likely" to do so.
ChangeWave described the next iPhone in broad terms, incorporating the speculation that's centered on a slightly-larger screen and a connection to the faster LTE mobile data networks, as well as the near-certainty that it will be powered by iOS 6, the next version of Apple's operating system.
Apple's current model, the iPhone 4S, does not support LTE, although the company added it to the new iPad, which debuted last March.
The 31% total of those who said they were likely to buy the iPhone 5 was 44% higher than the 21.5% who answered the same way in a survey ChangeWave conducted last year just before the launch of the iPhone 4S.
"The biggest finding of the survey is the unprecedented level of advance demand for the next generation Apple iPhone, which based on these survey numbers easily dwarfs the advance demand of any previous iPhone launch," said Carton.
Apple does not disclose individual iPhone model sales, but in the two quarters reported since the Oct. 4, 2011, launch of the iPhone 4S, the company has sold 72.1 million iPhones, its best-ever six-month stretch.
Apple will reveal its second-quarter sales figures tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT during an earnings call with Wall Street analysts.
The survey results meshed with financial analysts' expectations for the iPhone 5, or whatever Apple calls the next model. Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets, for instance, has forecast iPhone calls in 2012's final quarter -- the one during the putative launch of the smartphone -- at 44.7 million units, or 21% more than the previous best of 12 months earlier.
ChangeWave also asked consumers their thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone, which went on sale last month.
Of the people polled, 2% said they were very likely to buy a Galaxy S III "in the future," with another 7% acknowledging that they were somewhat likely to do so.
According to Carton, the top reason why those consumers said they would buy the Samsung smartphone was the size and quality of the screen.
Yesterday, Samsung revealed that it had sold 10 million Galaxy S III handsets globally in its first two months of availability, a mark the preceding Galaxy S II took five months to reach.
When all Samsung phones are taken into account, the Asian company's fortunes are even brighter: 19% of those polled who said they were planning on buying a smartphone in the next 90 days selected Samsung as the maker.
That's an all-time high for Samsung in ChangeWave's tracking, and nearly four times that of a year ago.

Nokia, which has tied its success to Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system, was up one point from March to 2%, said Carton.Other smartphone makers scored poorly in ChangeWave's latest survey, with just 4% of those polled citing Motorola and 3% HTC as their vendor of choice. Motorola, which is now owned by Google, was down two percentage points from a March poll, while HTC was flat.
The dominance of Apple and Samsung -- especially the former -- among consumers planning future smartphone purchases pointed to a two-horse race at this point, said Carton.
"The huge wave of pent-up demand for the coming iPhone launch has important implications for the rest of the industry ... and puts a number of second-tier smartphone manufacturers at increased risk of coming in below plan for the year," Carton said.
Apple has not announced when it will launch the next iPhone, much less its name or feature set. Most experts, however, expect the company to follow the same schedule as last year. Apple introduced the iPhone 4S on Oct. 4, 2011, and started selling the device on Oct. 14.
If the company hews to the 2011 timetable, it would announce the new iPhone Oct 2, 2012, and kick off sales Oct. 12.

New Possible Features Improvement on IPhone 5

There has been much hype about the soon to be release Apple Iphone 5 release. There has not been any rumours or leaks about the new features and improvement. The smartphone market is getting crowded with Samsung releasing Galaxy S II and HTC new Evo 3D. Both of which can agreeably have “better” features than the current Iphone 4 model.
In this article we investigate top 5 features or improvement that Iphone 5 might have to stay on top in the smartphone race.
  1. Bigger screen. Current Iphone 4 only has 3.5 inch compare to HTC or Samsung. Screen size is a very important features for viewing wide angle movies and better feeling during web browsing.
  2. OLED LCD Screen. Samsung currently has the best quality of LCD viewing with AMOLED screen. It new screen improves battery lifes and greatly enhance readability. Iphone 5 needs to on par with their improve retina display technology.
  3. Dual Core Processor. Apple’s A4 processor speed was never revealed to the public but speculation is that it runs at only 800 Mhz. Newer generation like the HTC and Samsung runs at dual core up to 1.2 Ghz. The current games and application designed will take benefits of faster processor speed.
  4. Improved battery life. Iphone 4 has only 1420mah compared with HTC 1720 mah. Short battery life has always been Apple greatest weakness. I hope Apple will improve the battery life in the next release.
  5. Full HD movie recording. Both Samsung and HTC already has full HD video encoding compared to Iphone lowly 720p resolution recording.
Apple Iphone 5 is targeted to be release early first week of October and we can just sit back and wait if any of the above improvement will see light in the new model.
